Tieng Viet Tone Markers

Memorize which accent markers to use in the Vietnamese alphabet.
A quiz game developed by Rutkat

How to Play

  1. Memorize. The round opens with a grid of the round's words shown with all their markers. Study them until the preparation timer runs out (set it from 5–30 seconds below), or skip ahead.
  2. Recall. Each word then returns with every marker removed, and the letter(s) that lost one pulse pink. Tap the square marker buttons to restore everything that was stripped — tone marks and letter marks alike. One pick per marker; tap the same button twice when a marker repeats (e.g. the two horns in trường).
  3. Scoring. Every correctly matched marker is worth 1 point; wrong picks score nothing. Your answer submits itself as soon as you have picked the required number of markers.
  4. Word timer. When enabled, you get 5 seconds per word. When time is up, the correct markers are revealed and the game moves on with 0 points for that word.
  5. Round end. After the last word you see how many markers you matched out of the total, plus a per-word recap. Points accumulate in the session score, which lasts until the browser tab is closed.
  6. (Nine markers)
Five tone marks: Four letter markers:
    Huyền ◌̀ (falling), circumflex ◌̂ (â ê ô),
    Sắc ◌́ (rising) breve ◌̆ (ă),
    Hỏi ◌̉ (hook above) horn ◌̛ (ơ ư)
    Ngã ◌̃ (tilde) dyet đ (barred d)
Nặ ng ◌̣ (dot below) -

Shortcuts: keys 1–9 pick markers, Backspace removes the last pick. Skill level (6 / 9 / 12 words), timers and theme live in Game Settings below.
